Scam Call Decision Guide

Answer three quick questions about a call that feels off.

  1. 1. Are they pressuring you to act right now, or threatening arrest, fines, or account closure?

  2. 2. Are they asking for money, gift cards, wire transfers, crypto, or your passwords and codes?

  3. 3. Did they contact you out of the blue and claim to be family, a bank, or the government?

If someone calls claiming to be family in an emergency, ask for this word before you do anything. No word, no money.

Password Strength Checker

Test how strong a password is. This runs entirely on your device and is never saved, but as a habit, do not type a password you currently use.

If a call, text, or email does any of these, stop and verify.

  • Pressures you to act immediately
  • Threatens arrest, fines, or account closure
  • Asks for gift cards, wire transfers, or crypto
  • Requests passwords, PINs, or one-time codes
  • Says do not tell anyone, including your bank
  • Contacts you out of the blue about a prize or refund
  • Caller ID looks official but the story feels off
  • Asks you to install software or share your screen
  • A loved one in trouble but the voice or details seem odd
  • Any payment method that cannot be reversed

  • Bank account or routing numbers
  • Credit or debit card numbers and CVV
  • Online banking username or password
  • One-time verification or security codes
  • Medicare or health insurance ID

  • Remote access to your computer or phone

First 24 Hours After a Scam

If you think you were scammed, act calmly and in order.

  • Stop all contact with the scammer
  • Call your bank and card companies to freeze or dispute
  • Change passwords, starting with email and banking
  • Turn on two-factor authentication where you can
  • Place a fraud alert or freeze with the credit bureaus
  • Report to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov
  • Report to the FBI at IC3.gov if money was lost
  • Write down dates, names, numbers, and amounts
  • Tell a trusted family member, you are not alone
